As the sun peeked through the clouds, I found myself standing in front of the Solar House at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). My mission for the day: to educate a group of 10 students attending the UIW Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program about a lesser-known environmental issue—E-Waste Recycling and Reusing.

Electronic waste, or E-Waste, is a growing concern worldwide. It encompasses discarded electronic devices such as old cell phones, laptops, and obsolete gadgets. These seemingly harmless items contain toxic materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can harm both human health and the environment. Combined with the fact that it was the fastest growing type of waste. I emphasized the urgency of addressing E-Waste and the role each of us plays in its proper disposal.

During the lecture, I discussed ways to take care of e-waste. I discussed recycling programs, responsible disposal methods, and the importance of repairing and repurposing electronics whenever possible. The students listened, realizing that their small actions could collectively make a significant impact. At the end, I showcased several power banks and USB power supplies that the Ecoshare Initiative had collected, cleaned, and tested, offering them for free to anyone in need. To my pleasant surprise, the students took all of them.

To reinforce the importance of renewable energy, I introduced the day’s main activity which was building solar-powered fans. I distributed kits containing mini solar panels, motors, and fan blades to the students. I guided the participants through the assembly process, whilst explaining how solar energy could power everyday devices.

As the students connected wires, secured panels, and watched their fans spin, their faces lit up. The Solar House was filled with the gentle hum of spinning blades, a testament to their newfound knowledge and hands-on experience. Their delight was contagious, and I couldn’t help but share in their enthusiasm.

After the event had ended, I reflected on the day’s success. Not only had we explored E-Waste and renewable energy, but we’d also fostered a sense of empowerment. These students now have practical knowledge and a tangible reminder that they could make a difference.

So, next time you consider tossing that old phone or laptop, remember the impact it can have. Together, we can create a brighter, cleaner future.
